BURGAS

Burgas is the largest city in southeastern Bulgaria and the second largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Burgas is the most important cultural, economic, transport, management, tourist and educational center in Southeastern Bulgaria. Near Burgas are: the largest chemical and oil refinery in Southeast Europe, which is also the largest employer in Bulgaria; the international and the second busiest Bulgarian airport; the largest Bulgarian port; the only oil port in the country.
The several nature reserves and protected areas, the ancient and medieval settlements, the Black Sea, Strandzha and the annual festivals attract many tourists. Burgas is known in Bulgaria as the "City of Birds and Lakes". Burgas Cathedral, named after the Slavic educators, the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius; and the Poda Protected Area are among the 100 national tourist sites. The Monastery of St. Anastasia on the island of the same name in the waters of the Burgas Bay is the only preserved medieval island monastery in the Black Sea.
Today's name of the city comes from the Greek Pyrgos (Pyrgos) - tower. According to local legends, the name comes from a Roman road pillar, the so-called burg, which was laid in the area of ​​today's Bourgas port. In the 19th century it was also called Ahelo Burgas.
